Andy: I had the exact same problem (with XP Pro). I
spent about 30 hours tracking down the fix so I hope it
works for you.
Do a search of your hard drive for a FOLDER named V4.
Ultimately, I deleted that folder and the files within it,
but you may want to rename these items for the time
being. Once renamed or deleted, reboot your system and
Windows will re-create that folder and the accompanying
files. Then click on Windows Update and IT SHOULD WORK!
Please let me know if this works for you, it was a
TREMENDOUS pain for me and Microsoft was of no help
whatsoever in getting this fixed.
