XP Prof- Intermittant lockups

Having been plagued by intermittant lockups for some days
since downloading MS security upgrades. And, after
extensive diagnostic work, I have pinpointed the trouble
to the non DVD CDROM being configured as digital and not
analog. The problem was cured by unchecking the tick box
in "Device Manager" "CDROM" "Propoerties" "Properties".
Event manager showed this fault as "redbook" "error 10"
This feedback may be of some help to someone.
