Is it safe to boot my XP Home computer using a Windows
98SE boot disk?
I am running Windows XP (Home Edition) on a Dell desktop
computer. I have an occasion to run a program which will
delete all of the INDEX.DAT files, which Symantec Corp.
tech support informs me are corrupted.
I have the software to perform the removal of the
INDEX.DAT files and have "experimented" using the
software on an older, Win98SE computer. All worked
well. The INDEX.DAT regenerate themselves the next time
I booted the computer.
To actually effect the deletion of the corrupted .DAT
files, it is necessary to run a batch file from a DOS
prompt, WITHOUT having any version of Windows running.
I have a Win98SE floppy boot disk and also a Win98SE cd-
ROM boot disk. But I'm not too sure if it is safe to
boot an XP (Home) computer using an older OS boot disk.
Can anyone advise me? Thanks.....
Jim
