Error in XP professional

I keep getting an error that says system.exe encountered
an error and needs to shut down. Then it gives me the
option to send the error to microsoft or not. Earthlink
told me this error has to do with a virus. ANybody have
any ideas? Additionally, i can not view web pages
anymore, and the problem seems to happen when i start
explorer....thanks....
