I don't have the driver instalation file. I am thinking to post at the MSI
forum to see if someone downloaded it successfully from the Synatics web

If you have the driver installation file you could uninstall the device in
Device Manager and reinstall it.
If you do not have the driver installation file you can get it at:
http://www.synaptics.com/support/drivers
However, since your notebook manufacturer doesn't provide a driver, be advised
that Synaptics site mentions many times over that the driver should be obtained
from the PCs manufacturer and only from Synaptics as a last resort.
Another thought if the touchpad still doesn't bring joy after
uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers is to clean the touchpad to see if it
helps.

- The botton is enabled.
- No, the touchpad exhibits the problem after external mouse is
disconnected and notebook rebooted.
- My computer properties only dispalys two tabs: General and Shortcut --no
Hardware. You probably meant the mouse properties window, and under
Devices are listed two items: 1.Synaptics PS/2 Port Pointing Device; 2.
HID-complient mouse.
- the drivers listed are Synaptics 10.2.3.0 and microsoft 5.1.2600.0. It
also states that these devices are working properly. Clicking on driver
details, for Synaptics there is a list of Synaptics and Windows files;
for HID there is a list of two windows files.
- I wonder if I should try the Update Driver tab for Synaptics.

The touchpad uses both tapping and sliding.
Under the Device Settings tab there should be a button to
Enable/Disable the touchpad, if it is present make sure that it is not
disabled.
Does the touchpad work properly if you disconnect the external mouse
and reboot?
Right click MyComputer on the desktop.
Click Properties in the popup menu.
Click the Hardware tab > Device Manager button.
What's listed as the pointing device in Device Manager > Mice and Other
Pointing Devices?
Double click the listed device to open its properties.
Click the Driver tab > Driver Details button.
What drivers are installed for the device?

Addenda:
- I went through a windows update a bit prior to having the problem.
- My notebook employs an odd pointing device by Synaptics that uses
finger tapping instead of sliding. Under the device settings tab it
reads Synaptics pointing device driver v 10.2.3 . Yet I don't see
where to check its configurational settings.

I checked under the 6 tabs at Mouse Properties and saw no suspicious
settings there. The word "touchpad" doesn't appear anywhere there.
Under the "device settings" tab there only appears the Wheel Mouse.
I have not Installed/uninstalled anything recently. The problem
started 2 days ago.
I Checked viruses and malware, and also restored the system -- all
with no results.
How can I check out the XP standard MS mouse driver?
"Brian A." wrote:
Have you looked in Start > Settings > Control Panel > Mouse
properties to check the touchpads configuration settings? The
touchpad uses the Standard MS mouse driver in XP.
Have you recently installed/uninstalled any software, hardware,
drivers, etc? If yes, was the touchpad working properly after doing
so? If yes, when did you first notice the issue with the touchpad
and what were you doing at the time?

On attempting to drag an Icon on my desktop using my built-in
mouse the computer freezes. Also, I am unable to select
individual sections of a text, hence I cannot use the ctrl c & V
properly. It used to work ok until recently. These problems do
not occur when I use an external mouse. I have an MSI wind U100
notebook with XP sp3. Any solution? If I need to repair a driver
-- How do I go about doing it?
I just looked at the MSI website at the page for your particular model
laptop, and it says that the touchpad uses the driver that's bundled
with the OS. So what you can do is this, right click on My Computer
(either on the desktop or in the Start menu) and select Properties. In
the System Properties window, click on the Hardware tab, then click on
the Device Manager button. In the Device Manager Window click on the
plus mark next to the line that says "Mice and other pointing devices".
Now right-click on the line that is for your Synaptics Pointing Device
and then choose uninstall. Next confirm that you want to remove the
device and then click on ok on all windows to get back to the desktop
and reboot. When the PC boots up again Windows will detect the touchpad
and reinstall the driver for it and this should correct the problem.
