Sounds like the "Program not responding" issue which can be caused by a few things software or hardware related. The first thing to look for is a possible culprit in Task Manager > Processes tab to see if any process is causing high CPU usage.
To run/open Task Manager:
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL.
Click the Processes tab.
At the bottom of the Task Manager window you will see the percentage of CPU use. If the percentage is high look in the CPU column for any processe(s) that are using a high percentage with the exception of the System Idle Process, it should be high if other processes are not.
If Task Manager fails to give up a clue, check the Event Viewer for any errors and a possible resolution to the problem.
To run/open the Event Viewer:
Click Start > Run, type in: eventvwr.msc and press Enter or click Ok.
Expand the event viewer window.
Click once on either Applications or System in the Left pane.
Double click on an error listed in the Right pane to open up the Event Properties description window.
Click the link if included at the end of the description, it will open to a page with a "possible solution".
If the linked page has no possible solution, you can copy the description in the Event Properties window by clicking the button with the "2 document sheets" graphic.
After clicking the copy button:
Open a response to this thread.
Click once in the text pane and press CTRL+V to paste the text in your response.
Send the response and we'll have a look at the error discription.
Also try conducting a clean boot to see if it will give up the culprit.

WinXP Home Sp2 After clicking on an item, or just a
keystroke, about every 4-5 times the cursor changes
to the hourglass and just hangs there, no error
message, just all locked with that icon. Then, I
wait, and eventually it all releases, and I can
proceed. Also, loading is very slow. I'm a computer
novice, bear with me . All my scans etc are clean.
Any suggestions? Thanks (remember, your reply to me
must be sent so that a 10 year old mind can
understand it !!)
