SNIP

Agent (which I use)

I see that Agent requires payment: $30.

Can anyone recommend a free news reader? I use NetNewsWire on my
Macintosh and it is just superb in that is fast, intuitive, free, and
does not bombard you with adds. In fact, no adds of any sort.

Anything like out there for Windows?

My recommendation is that, at least as a start, you use Outlook
Express (even though I don't). I recommend it because it's part of
Windows, and you already have it. See
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm to learn
how to set it up and use it.

Outlook Express is not the best newsreader, but it's not a terrible
one either. Using it will give you experience with a newsreader under
Windows, and let you find out which of its features you like, what you
don't like, and what features you are missing. Once you've had enough
experience with it to know those things, it would be a good idea to
try several of the downloadable newsreaders, whether freeware or
shareware, and see how they meet *your* needs. Although I personally
use and like Agent 5.0, we all have different likes, dislikes and
needs, and I recommend that you don't just go with my recommendation
or anyone else's; try them for yourself, and make your own decision.
