XP will not fully boot

After getting home from a month long road trip my desktop box would not boot into XP. I believe the first slash screen came up then the screen went black with only white mouse arrow on the screen. The system had now locked up because the mouse. I booted in Safe Mode and the machine took a long time to boot up. I looked through the event logs to see what was going on but could not make out what the problem was. I tried to boot in Safe Mode with network connection but went into an endless boot that I finally had to stop. In Safe Mode I did run a AVG virus scan (with month old definitions but then the machine hadn't been on in more than a month) but AVG found nothing. Does anyone have any idea where to look for the problem?

Thank you, Tim
