I tried several things, and eventually threw up my hands in dispair.
Then I wiped the hard drive, re-loaded Windows XP, did the hundreds of
"critical" updates, and reloaded my programs.
Things now work like a charm!
Guess everyone should wipe the hard drive and start from scratch once
a year . . . . .
