In this new installation of XP Pro an icon for MS security is on the
system tray and is constaltly popping up a bubble telling me to turn on
auto-updating (and unless I do my system is going to die the death of a
rag baby and never live to see the back of its neck). How can I get rid
of that thing?

Security Center active in system tray? ... I installed XP SP2 and configured the security center to notify me ... of any updates.Just after installation, I noted the security shield icon... in the system tray and presumed that some component was ... (microsoft.public.windowsxp.perform_maintain)

I get a pop up message in my system tray that states my system may be ... clicked on it takes me to the security center within XP. ... the firewall engages and all ... I have a slow dial-up connection so I deactivated the automatic update... which also removed that gawdawful icon from the system tray.... but everything went fine once I went into the Security Center ...
