Re: Reinstalling Windows Components

I do not understand. Try this, Don.

Open a command prompt...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
In the command prompt type: sfc /? hit Enter.

What happens? Do you get an error? Or a line starting with:
Microsoft(R) Windows XP Windows File Checker Version 5.1???

System File Checker (sfc) help...
Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

hh ntcmds.chm::/system_file_checker.htm

Thanks Wesley, that ran, but SFC still won't run from the hard disk. How
do I re-install SFC on my hard disk? I've searched and can't find
*components*.

Thanks for your help.

I just tried it and all I got was a flash of a black window! What would
have caused that?

If you type just: sfc into Start | Run, it will just flash the
command prompt and close it.

Try this.

System File Checker (sfc.exe) replaces screwed up system files.

Load your XP CD in your CD drive.

Start | Run | Type or paste: sfc /scannow | Click OK

sfc /scannow scans all protected system files immediately and replaces
incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

System File Checker takes a while to run.

If you have XP Home and it asks for your XP Pro CD, see this KB
article...

You may be prompted to insert a Windows XP Professional CD when you run
the System File Checker tool in Windows XP Home Edition

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be listed in the Event Viewer.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK | Click System |

Windows File Protection will be listed under the Source column. Look at
any Windows File Protection entries.

Explains a whole bunch about sfc.exe.
