Gail, everyone has there own personal preference when it comes to software. I've tried free versions of AVG (which incidentally 'is' staying free) and Avast and find them equally as good. Some people will use nothing else but Norton Anti Virus or Mcafee. Personally, i wouldn't touch either Norton or Mcafee, but that is my personal opinion.
My brother recently had a new laptop, it came pre-installed with Norton Internet Security. As soon as we finished registering and activating the laptop i immediately stripped Norton internet security off the laptop and installed AVG and Zone Alarm.

Installing the firewall while online does make your machine vulnerable,
particularly as you have no anti virus cover. But don't panic it isn't a
disaster. Visit http://free.grisoft.com and download the Free version of AVG
anti virus. Once downloaded, log off the internet and then install AVG. Once
installed log back onto the internet and update the virus definitions. Once
the virus definitions have been installed then do a complete virus scan of
your system.
In my opinion, Avast antivirus is better than AVG. I had AVG and it's
soon to be a paid-for program, no longer free, plus Avast found four
Trojans on my computer that AVG never detected. Avast is still free,
and better than AVG.
