Re: SP2 UPDATE

I could really use some assistance. I have been browsing google
and forums for a couple days and am just getting more and more
confused... not to mention frustrated.

Here is my dilemma. My hard drive crashed so I just did a fresh
install of XP PRO on an older system that has SP1 (part
#X08-33951). Since it is SP1 it didn't recognize all 250GB. I
haven't reinstalled the D-Link wireless DWL-G520 yet so I don't
have internet setup. All I have on it is what the CD has. I want
to get all the OS updates/patches/drivers downloaded first. Unless
this is the wrong way to go about it. I haven't had to load XP PRO
before so this is all new to me.

I have another system that has a newer copy of XP and it has SP2
(PART #X10-52217). Is there any way that I can use that CD to
update the first one?

If not, I would like to save all updates to the SP2 systems hard
drive and copy them to CD, or pen drive or an external hard drive.
Whichever is the easiest.

I guess I need to know an easy way to copy the wireless network
settings
from the SP2 system while I'm at it. That way all the information
is together.

Whatever it takes, I can start all over.

I would really really really appreciate some dummy proof help.
PLEASE!!

Windows XP with SP1 should support your hard disk drive "out of the box".

Download SP2, burn it to CD, use it to install onto the otrher system. Once
you have done this, install your hardware drivers (I would do the network
first - turn on the firewall, hook to the Internet, then download and
install the rest) and then download and install the rest of the patches from
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ - that should get you up to date.

You can collect all the updates and burn them to CD or even integrate them
(including SP2) into a installable/bootable Windows XP CD.

You can download and save all updates for later use - including service
packs. You can even integrate those patches into your Windows XP
installation CD - so if you had to reinstall - you wold end up almost
fully-patched right fromthe beginning.

For service pack 2 in particlular:

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-may.mspx

July 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-jul.mspx

Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.
