Why does it matter? If you don't want to use IE, you can use any other
browser your prefer. Why do you feel it necessary to remove IE (it's part of
the operating system and doesn't remove easily). There are many Windows
components I never use: wordpad, paint, narrator, solitaire, firewall,
backup, defrag etc. I either don't use the function at all, or prefer a
third-party program instead. But I don't feel the need to remove these
functions, either. They use only a small amount of disk space and their
presence, unused, doesn't hurt me in any way.



When Vista cmes out, can I just remove IE without any undesirable
side effects - or better yet, be given the choice not to install it?


I know very little about current Vista options, and whatever they may not be
the same in the released version, but my guess it that it will be the same
as it is in XP--you can't remove it without jumping through hoops, and
jumping through those hoops is dangerous. But that's fine with me. I will
either use it or choose an alternative (yet to be determined), but I will
feel no need to remove it. Moreover, I think it's prudent to leave it in
place even it could be removed. You never know when an oddball situation
might arise in which you need it.
