Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Error

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

I tried posting this in the "general" newsgroup, but got no response:

----------------

Lately I've been getting an error message that seems to be connected in the
"greying out" of my audio and sound device options. It reads:

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Someone else who is running XP has started to experience the exact same
problem. I have tried a restore, ghosting a clean install and doing a
complete reinstallation, but the error message and consequences repeat.

Anyone have a similar experience, or knows what's going on?

Thanks.
