Re: Remote Assistance

Thanks for the suggestions, James.

Before I go hogwild setting up this local network connection, what I want to
accomplish is connect from pc2 (my new pc) to pc1 (my old pc), when the
latter has been taken out of town by my daughter. It may very well end up on
a different ISP. So even if your suggestion works right now, it won't when
they're further apart.
Basically, I do not understand how subnet and mask can play a role here,
since I can connect from old pc1 to new pc2 right now.

Short of uninstalling NAV, I have unchecked every single protection feature.
I have disabled the firewalls.
But no cigar.

oh,
and most importantly, make sure they both
have the same workgroup name,
and that file and printer sharing is enabled on both.
this way you will be able to directly browse
the other computer from my network places.

first, they are likely on different IP subnets.
they both acquire an IP from the ISP via dhcp.

if you want them to talk to each other
then config them statically in the same subnet
with same mask. of course no ISP this way.

machine 1: 10.0.0.1, mask 255.255.255.0, no gw, dns doesnt matter.
machine 2: 10.0.0.2, mask 255.255.255.0 no gw, dns doesnt matter.

otherwise youll need a router behind the ISP's cablemodem
to put both on the same subnet, preferably statically.

drop firewalls totally and disable norton totally.
when you get a connection, start turning stuff on
individually to find the culprit.

"Remote Assistance connection could not be established because the remote
host name could not be resolved."

I have 2 XP-Home pc's, sitting side-by-side in this room, connected
through
a network hub (not a router) to the same ISP.
Both have Windows Firewall on, allowing exceptions.
I can connect through RA from pc1 to pc2, but the reverse results in the
above message.
PC1 is on Norton AV, PC2 is on AVGfree. I have disabled AutoProtect and
Worm
Protection in NAV, but that makes no difference.

Any ideas?
