This may not be the answer you are looking for, but rather than a clean
install, why not just disable the screensaver?

When I leave my computer idling the screen saver kicks in (as would be
expected) but then when I move my mouse or awaken the computer the program
that is currenly open (any program) shuts down . Why is this happening
