I just (re)installed XP Pro on my 1 GHz laptop. I installed SP2 and
then downloaded and installed 40 specific fixes for XP. None for
Explorer or Media Player, since I don't use them.
Everything seems to move in slow motion, compared to my 600 MHz
desktop running 98SE. Am I the only one with this kind of problem?
If not, is there some way to speed it up.
Was not slow before?
I suspect that SP2 + the 40 'fixes' have made XP Pro a giant (pun intended) in more ways than one.
What happened to the good ol' days, when software upgrades meant faster, smaller, and more features?
Did you update all of the hardware drivers?
Specifically: Chipset and Video Card?
No. Thanks for the thought.
You need to go to the hardware manufacturer web pages for each of those items and download/install the latest drievrs - should really do this for all of your hardware.
Unfortunately the laptop division of eMachines, i.e. KDS, went out of business shortly after I bought the machine. However, I have run into a website that seems to have assembled some KDS related items.
Also - how much memory do you have?
248 Mb. I'm going to start getting rid of a bunch of garbage that came on the install CDs, e.g. MSWorks.
If less than 1GB of RAM, I would turn off many of the Windows XP "look" features - as that may eat some of your resources.
I'm not certain I know what you mean by "look" features; however, I do remember running into a bunch of selectable 'services', but I can't remember how to access them, unless it was with msconfig.
Can someone help me here?
You also may want to consider finding out what all you have running in the background and minimizing the applications that are running.
Will do. Are you saying that a running app uses less memory if it is minimized?
Thanks for your help.
