I have XP prof sp2. Dell put a new hard drive in my
Inspiron 5150 so I did a back up of my files using the
windows backup utility. I did not do a full backup of the
system but only data files. After reinstalling WinXP I
then began to selectively restore data files using the
utility to My Documents just to make sure everything would
work ok. I restored "My Music" and "My Videos" using the
options "To the original location" since there was nothing
there. Under the Advanced Restore Options, I left checked
all 3 options (Restore security settings, Restore junction
points..., Preserve existing volume mount points). I
restored the files and the resulting report said that it
was done successfully. The problem is that when I went to
the newly restored folders, neither would now open. The
dialog box said: "C:\Documents and Settings\LDC\My
Documents\My Videos is not accessible. Access is denied"
I tried to delete the folders, with the same result. With
the help of a friend, I tried to open/delete the folders
using safe mode command prompt. But the result was the
same - access denied. I've tried restoring the same
folders again using different options, but with the same
result. I used System Restore, but rolling back did not
change the access denied. When I look at these folders in
Explorer using properties, they show nothing in them...
I'm at the end of my know how! Can someone help me?

You can try taking ownership of the files to see if that
will allow you access. Take a look at these articles for
more info:

Note: If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition,
you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on
with an account that has Administrative rights to have
access to the Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot
your computer and start tapping the F8 key as soon as you
see anything displayed on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until
the Advanced Startup Options menu appears. Use the up and
down arrow keys on your keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit
Enter.

Good luck
