I recently picked up a used winxp box that actually now sports a
dual boot setup with winXPpro and suse10 both on seperate HD's. The
system is an older AMD@ around 400MHz. I have been getting issues
right off the hop, so here I am. Under windows, when I try to start
the system up, I constantly get screen locks and have to try
re-booting, which usually leads to another lock-up!! When I do
finally get up and running, and try to shut down, it also locks and
I have to reset rather than shut-down through software. Under Linux
I have the same shutdown issue, but no start-up problems at all. I
am able to re-start under both OS's. just no hard shut-down?? What
is the problem here??
I also have an SMC PCI eth card, and a D-Link PCI wifi card. When I
first set the system up and fired up, they were both sharing the
same IRQ, which no doubt caused all sorts of problems. I opened the
unit up and switched out with other PCI slots available, and now
they both have different IRQ addresses, but I am still having
problems with them in some capacity because I cannot connect
wirelessly, and think that these may even be the cause of my
locking issues somehow?? They both seem to be fine under Linux, but
windows tends to lock whenever I try to gain access to their
resources!! Helpme???
The sharing of IRQs is not an inherent indication of trouble.
- Are the drivers up-to-date in your Windows install - straight from the
hardware manufacturers and not Microsoft?
- How about the machine BIOS - is it up to date?
- You did not mention the amount of RAM or hard drive space devoted to the
Windows installation.. Could be either of those things. I know 400MHz
would run windows like bat-out-of-hell (if it was nailed to a board, thrown
in a deep pit and covered with a large boulder.)
Some more specific Windows information and hardware information might help
us troubleshoot. Driver versions, motherboard specs and BIOS revision,
amount of memory, amount of hard drive space, service pack and patch level,
any event log entries that happen around the time the problems arise, etc...
