Thanks, Welsey. Yes, I was able to install Word from my CD. I entered the 25
character registration number after the half hour install. I am now relieved
that I can now access all of my Word 6 files. I'm on the high road to
happiness.

works fine with XP. If you have a full blown version of MS Works Suite 2001
CD, you should have no problem installing it. I do not know if it still
needs to be registered, etc.
Some things changed with XP SP2.

There are two methods listed here...
You receive a "Cannot load Word for Windows 6.0 files" error message when
you try to open a file on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack
2, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

[[Rich Text Format (RTF) is a text document format (.rtf) that is sometimes
used instead of Plain Text format (.txt) or Microsoft Word format (.doc).
Windows XP SP2 disables the RTF converters that were installed with versions
of Windows XP that are earlier than Windows XP SP2. If you do not have an
RTF converter from an installed program, documents that require this
converter will not open.]]

Jack <Jack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> hunted and pecked:
Can not load Word 6 files. This is why?
My previous Dell PC came with Microsoft Works Suite 2001, which includes
Word 6.0. I have the 6 CD's that came with the Suite. I have had to use
the CD's when I had a new disc drive installed to replace a bad one on the
Dell PC. The OS is ME and I created many files in the Word 6 format.
I purchase an E-Machine in November 2004 and finally unboxed it 10 days
ago. It has Wind XP Home and it does not contain the Microsoft Works
Suite.
I have spent many days updating it with more than 35 Microsoft updates.
It is now up to Service Pack 2. I have even downloaded the security
patches for
Word which have been mentioned elsewhere on the New User Forum.
I have moved five years of Word 6 files from the older PC and placed them
on this
new XP PC. Since Microsoft Works Suit is never contained on the XP
release, unless an upscale vender like Dell includes at an extra cost, it
is then understandable why I can not read Word 6 files.
Questions:
Is there any way that I can convert all of these Word 6 files that I have
on my XP
system into some other format that is supported by the standard releases
of XP?
Or, can the conversion be done on the old Dell PC with Wind ME? And then I
could
recopy them over to the new XP system?
Can I legally bring on Microsoft Works Suit 2001, which I own, onto my XP
PC and use it to read Word 6 files? Is this older Suit 2001 compatabile
with XP? Once I get the files converted, I want to disable Word 6 so that
it is never used
to create a new. Files created in Word 6 format can't be sent to other
PC's that
do not have the Word 6 Suite.
