Re: Re-install XP

Have you looked in the manual that came with your computer for
a section outlining installing XP? If you don't have a manual,
you can download one from the Dell Support site. Under Popular
Support Tools, enter the info about your system and select
"User Guides and Manuals".

As long as you have the correct CD, reinstalling XP on a Dell
is not that difficult a procedure. First off, make sure the CD
Dell sent you is an actual XP installation CD. It should look
something like this:

Dell XP Pro installation CD

Dell XP Home installation CD
http://client.attenza.com/ektron/dell/mogden/XP_HOME_CD.gif

If you're looking to perform a clean installation of XP, you
might want to take a look at these articles:

Clean Install Procedure with Illustrative Screen Captures

Clean Install Windows XP

Keep in mind that the only items that should be attached to
your computer during the installation are the keyboard, mouse
and monitor. Disconnect everything else. Gather up all the CD's
and license keys for any software you plan on reinstalling on
your system. You shouldn't need it but just to be on the safe
side make sure you have the 25 digit key for XP. It should be
on a sticker attached to your computer.

Before you wipe out your current installation, you should go to
this Dell site and download the latest drivers for the hardware
that is installed on your system:

Where Can I Find Downloadable Drivers, Files, and Utilities for
My Dell? Computer?
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=FA1026016

You state that you've backed up your limited files. Have you
considered using the Files and Settings transfer wizard?

If you're looking to only perform a repair installation, Dell
provides some useful info on that procedure here:

Performing a Repair Reinstall of Windows XP
http://service.dell.com/dell/kb/tech_support/view_article/1,,6418+6429+18287,00.html

If after looking over this information you still have questions
please include the make and model number of your Dell system.

Good luck

I've recently re-installed XP.
I sure can an recommend doing this to anyone who has
"unexplained" problems. All of them disappereed.

However, one new "problem" showed up: Whenver I allow the
computer to go into "System Standby" or "System Hibernate",
it comes back to the "Welcome - click on your name" screen
when I wake up the system.
It did not used to do that.
Can anyone tell me how to make it come back either to the
desk-top, or to the page where it was when it went into
"standby"?

Thanks!

In addition to the Screen Saver tab of Display Properties,
you might want to check on the following:

Go to Control Panel and double click Power Options.
In Power Options, click on the Advanced tab.
Remove the check mark from the box next to "Prompt for
password when computer resumes from standby".
Click OK.

Good luck
