And of course, any third party would I think bring up the question of
compatibility?
I wonder how old/type/make etc of system he has as I would have expected
most recent mobos having this facility.
I hope everything is not wilting inside his case!!!

Just another note: Although ASUS, MSI, etc... include their own software
to
monitor system health, there are third party programs that allow you to
monitor you system. However, for any such software to work, your BIOS
has to
beable to monitor these temperatures.

If you enter the BIOS (usually just press the DEL key when booting...may
be
different) there may be a section titled "Hardware Monitor" or something
similar...you may have to poke around. You may find a screen that shows
realtime temperatures, fan speeds, voltages, etc... If this is the case,
you
can likely monitor these temps within Windows. One such tool is
Motherboard

If you can't find the above hareware monitoring screen in your BIOS, you
may
be out of luck. In the worst case, you could just place a thermometer
inside
your case for a while ;-)

Usually case temperatures should be below 30 C (with an ambient room
temperatures of around 20 C). However, this may change depending on the
hardware you have in your computer. More hard drives, powerful video
cards,
fast CPUs, etc... will all raise the case temp...so be sure to always
have
good ventilaion.

Cpu fans, temp and power etc. It should come on a disk with the mobo.
If not then I am sure the respective web site would have such a prog.
There may also be a way of finding the info from the Bios Settings, but
cannot help you there.

There was a time when people opened up the case, and identified their
motherboard by the silkscreened information on it.
Depending on its age/make/model, there may be no onboard sensors for
temperature.
Look around for Everest or AIDA32.
