There's nothing dense about it. These things aren't obvious when you're
doing them for the first time.
When you run Add Printer (from Control Panel Printers and Faxes) one of the
first screens has a check off item to specify a local or network printer.
Under the Local printer option, there's another checkbox for "Automatically
detect and install my Plug and Play printer." That should not be selected
if you are installing a driver when the printer is not physically connected.
Otherwise, Windows tries to find the hardware causing some difficulties.
