Thank you to you all for your help.

It looks as if sfc is now running in a satisfactory way.

When prompted for the installation disk, I now know to put it in the primary
drive, and to keep clicking "Retry" when asked, which seems to be about
twelve times during a run of sfc.

I have been into Event Viewer, which I did not know about, and seen the
message "Windows File Protection file scan completed successfully".
