This fix applies to Outlook and other programs that store passwords
in the Protected Storage System Provider sub-branch of the Registry.
It also corrects some issues with Internet Explorer and Autocomplete.

| Just kidding.
|
| However, I have a perplexing problem that arose after installing critical
| updates and Office 2000 SR-1 on a freshly installed XP Home to Pro upgrade.
| I found out that after the updates and Office install, my web browser no longer
| remembers usernames and passwords. I sometimes use an anonymous HTTP proxy for
| obvious reasons. On this machine prior to the problem, entering a username and
| password when prompted, and checking the "remember password" box resulted in the
| desirable behavior of that dialog box the next time user authentication was
| needed. Now, the box is void in both username and password fields. And the
| "remember password" checkbox is missing. No other applications are affected.
| Outlook Express 6 and Outlook 2000 both retain usernames and passwords just
| fine. Auto complete functions just fine. And the username and passwords on forms
| option in Content -> Auto complete in Internet options are checked.
|
| My background in Windows and Office is extensive having installed, upgraded,
| patched and repaired countless corporate workstations and network servers for
| going on 7 years now. I remember this happening one other time back in 2000 on a
| Win98 machine and never was able to resolve it. I know it's really not that big
| of a deal to just type a username and password in but I'm the kind of person
| that would like to know just what exactly causes this to occur.
|
| Thanks for any help given.
