I'll echo Bob's response (gosh! a question I can answer!)
I tested McAfee, and found it slowed my machine to a crawl. Of course,
that was an older machine, running Win98SE, but XP users also
mentioned such stuff(ing).
I also used Norton AntiVirus for some time - just short of a year,
till the dealer who installed a second hard drive suggested I try AVG
instead. He said it uses far fewer system resources than NAV (Norton
AntiVirus). I found AVG's performance really excellent, and I gave NAV
back to the person who had given it to me.
The free version of AVG is excellent; the paid version is astounding
and wonderful. With the free version, I'd make sure to configure it to
"use heuristics."
The cost for the paid version is currently $33.30 US - for a two-year
licence. Excellent price.
And you can still use the Symantec site to learn about viruses.
