I had her flush her dns cache, renew the ip address, etc. Nothing worked. We also checked her network connections in xp to make sure that tcp/ip was running and nothing looked amiss.
She was unable to reach her router from the desktop using any of address I'd expect it to be at (and we didn't get to check it from the laptop because I had her disconnect cables after going through the resets and flushes with no success, and she can't get back to where the cable is located to reconnect). But we could access the modem admin page, which resolved to the default gateway address. Nevertheless, she was not able to get past a login screen for which she claims she does not have credentials.
She was never able to test the modem directly connected to the laptop because she can't access the disconnected cable or is afraid to do so, one, so she's stuck without internet access and talking to a tech service guy who suggests he take her computter, wipe and reinstall at a cost of $60 an hour. I know there's a simpler solution to her problem than that.
Can anyone help?
Your description of the setup is a bit confusing, however based on MVP Malke's "First Question Of Troubleshooting"* the likely source of the problem is avg, zonealarm free, and/or spybot. My guess would be ZoneAlarm.
At this point, however, the situation may have escalated beyond what someone who is not sitting in front of the setup can do, especially if that someone is seeking advice from other someones who also can't see what's going on. At the very least, you have to be able to get the "good" laptop back online before you can begin to figure out what's going on with the "bad" desktop. FWIW, I doubt that a "wipe and reinstall" will accomplish much of anything, beyond deleting all of your SIL's data. That result will not be good for family relations.
If I understand correctly, initially there was a desktop (which had "problems") and a laptop (which had none?). Yes/No
The desktop was connected to the router with an Ethernet cable. Yes/No
The laptop was connected to the router wirelessly. Yes/No
After implementing your suggestions, neither computer works. Yes/No
What did you have her do to the laptop that caused it to no longer connect? Did you have her *reset* the router** to factory defaults?
I don't understand how she was able to disconnect a cable and be unable to reconnect it.

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?
** Does she have a modem and a separate router or a combo modem/router? Which, if either, did she reset to factory default?
