I can't decipher what that error message is telling me.

Anyone have any suggestions about how to proceed ??

ps I am trying to set up file & printer sharing with my Mac, running
10.5.6, over my wireless network created by a 2Wire DSL modem.

To start the Server service:

1. Open a command prompt window: Start > All Programs > Accessories >
Command Prompt.

2. Type this line at the prompt, then press Enter:

net start server

Make sure that "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is
enabled in the properties for the LAN connection.

That worked perfectly. I can now reach into the laptop from the Mac.

I'd like to put that commend in my XP startup sequence. I'm not entirely
comfortable in the command line but I have a neighbor who will help ... but
where would be the best place to put this command??

You're welcome, ***.

You shouldn't have to use that command line. Instead, configure the
Server service to start automatically when Windows starts:

1. Click Start > Run.
2. Type "services.msc" in the box and click OK.
3. Scroll down the list of services and click "Server".
4. Set the Startup type to Automatic.
5. If the service status is Stopped, click Start.
6. Click OK.
