Current set up: I have a modem plugged into the wall with one
computer connected via ethernet. It authenticates itself via a
username and password and gets to the internet great. I had to go
through the new connection set up in the "Network Connections"
window to set it up, no problems.
I now want to add a wireless network for two laptops. I have
connected a router to one of the ports of the modem and have set
up a WEP protected network. Both Laptops see the wireless network
and can get onto the network w/ the wep key. Now I have gone
through the new connection set up to give both computers the log
in and password (and both are correct) but only one laptop can log
into the internet at a time. If one logs off and I restart the
router than the other one can get on but they can't get on at the
same time.
Check your Router configuration. Usually you program the username and
password into the Router and the Router takes care of logging onto your
ISP. The client computers should be configured as Direct Connect to
Internet as the Router should handle connection to your ISP.
HTH,

This makes a lot of sense because I think the reason it doesn't work is that
the modem only sees one IP address and won't fullfill the second connection
request.
The router is actually a modem as well, though I was told it could work as a
simple router if the modem function was turned off. It is a Vigor2500. The
only place I currently see to put in a username and password is when I got to
"Internet Access set-up" and then "PPPoA/PPPoE." There are several options
here. Among them ISP Access setup where I currently have the username and
password, as well as "DSL Modem settings" (there is no DSL Modem on/off
toggle) Only the option to enable or disable PPPoE/A. Should PPPoA/E be
enabled? If It is enabled I feel like the modem is on and trying to dial in
but I don't think I want the modem to be on.
