Windows XP Home Edition Sharing/Networking

Since the advanced sharing is unavailable in XP Home, you must boot Windows
in safe mode to configure those settings. I've noticed after configuring
sharing in safe mode, that the settings are not retained when I restart and
boot back up normally.
How can I keep these settings?
Example: After sharing C and naming the share C$, I reboot and login to
find the following message on the sharing tab: To protect your computer from
unauthorized access, sharing the root of a drive is not recommended. If you
understand these risks but still want to share the root of the drive, click
here.
Upon clicking on the link, under Networking sharing and security, nothing is
being shared (the Share this folder on the network box is unchecked and there
is nothing in the Share Name field.
Upon rebooting in safe mode, I find the ellipses on the Sharing tab on Do
not share this folder.
How can I get Home to retain these sharing preferences, or better yet, is
there a way to somehow disabled simple file sharing in XP Home? Anything
Registry changes or anything?
Another thing I've noticed is when I opt to share a root directory using
simple file sharing, the next time I access the sharing tab, it doesn't show
it being shared, BUT when I try to reshare it using the same name, it says it
is already being shared by that name. It definitely isn't retaining the
advanced options set in safe mode though.
If I try to access the share after rebooting after making the share changes
in safe mode, I get rights error (unable to access this network resource?),
but if I enable sharing using simple file sharing, I can only connect as
guest. According to this site:
http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Simple
You can only log in as Guest when using simple file sharing. The username
field is greyed out when I attempt to connect to that share. Is there a way
around this?
I'm trying to basically find a solution to either disabled simple file
sharing in XP Home or get it configured with permissions so that I can
connect to this XP Home boxes hidden share from a remote machine.
Thanks!
