Remote shared folder changes location to local computer

I have a nicely working network of two desktops and a laptop, all
running XP Home, each providing a shared folder for use by the
others. Sometimes, of course, the laptop is removed from the
network. When that happens the behavior of the two desktops differs
and I'm wondering why. On one desktop, in the "My Network Places",
the computer listed for shared folder for the missing laptop changes
to "unknown". When the laptop is reconnected, it is eventually
detected and the computer listed shows its correct name again and the
shared folder is accessible again. But on the other desktop, when the
laptop is removed, the computer listed for it in "My Network Places"
eventually changes to "This computer" and it points to a local empty
file. When the laptop is reconnected, that fact is *not* detected.
If I manually delete the now worthless entry for the odd (now local)
"surrogate" for the laptop's shared folder and then add a new network
place for the laptop shared folder, it is quickly detected and all
works as planned again, until the next time the laptop is
disconnected. I've obviously got some parameter(s) set differently on
the two desktops but I haven't a clue as to what parameter(s) to
change on the desktop that "loses" the inactive shared folder and
makes it into a local folder. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
