Hi Chuck,
I wanted to make sure there was no s/w on the computers that might be
causing problems so I disconnected form the internet and disabled all
security applications. The problem persists but I think I can rule out a/v
and firewall conflicts. For comleteness I use:
a/v - NOD32
Firewall - Windows
Anti-Spy - Webroot Spysweeper
Also, I mentioned in a previous post that I'd disabled the Computer Browser
and TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper services. I tried starting each one separately to
see if it made any difference; the TCP/IP one made no difference but with the
Computer Browser service started I could "see" LAPTOP within the MSHOME group
and BROWSTAT returned
Status for domain MSHOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{2435513C-DB9B-4BDB-BD1D-26AD645FB00C}
Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: LAPTOP
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master LAPTOP
\\LAPTOP
There are 1 servers in domain MSHOME on transport

There are 1 domains in domain MSHOME on transport

Not sure if any of this helps
Malc,
You'll want the browser running on one of the computers - with just 2 computers,
you COULD use either one. I would use the desktop computer, for consistency.

Do you have NetBT explicitly Enabled on both computers?

If you start the browser on ONE computer, and if NetBT is Enabled on both
computers, and you still see "There are 1 servers", then you have a problem with
SMBs being blocked. And that will be a personal firewall issue.
Post a full set of diagnostics, periodically, so we can keep track of the
changes, please.
