I have a laptop with WiFi and I use it whereever there's wireless and

the hotel internet facility with a network cable (ethernet) but I
couldn't get any connection.
At home my laptop has a fixed IP-address (with its Mac address) and
its included in the router as a wireless node.
When I check my I394 connection I see "connected" with 400mbps ! But
no of bytes being exchanged in 0.
Can anybody please let me know how I can get internet connection using
the ethernet cable ?

The 1394 connection isn't ethernet; it's bluetooth. It sounds like you've
disabled your ethernet connection. Go to Control
Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager and expand the Network Devices
category. If you see a red "X" next to the ethernet adapter, right-click it
to enable it.

Other than that, you'll have an issue if you use a fixed IP address with
your ethernet card and that IP address is on a different subnet from the
one to which you want to connect. Ex. - if your static IP is 192.168.1.12
and the foreign network is on 192.168.0.xx, you won't be able to get to the
Internet.

Many thanks for your reply. You are right I394 is the wrong one I was
talking about. I did go to device manager an found that the Ethernet
Controller was not installed (yellow mark !). I installed it and
noticed that a new Local Connection 3 has been created. I filled in
all the details such as IP-address, subnet, DNS etc and noticed
disabled the wireless. I also disabled Local Connection. I noticed in
the status of the Ethernet connection that its connected with 100mb/
sec and "send" data was positive and increasing but the "receive" data
was 0. Internet was not available.
I realise that since I have decided to have fixed IP address and my
laptop with its Mac-address has an unique IP-address I may not be able
to get Ethernet connection.

My question is, is there any otherway I can use the Ethernet
connection to access Internet ?
