Robert, you are on the right track. I just rebooted the desktop in Safe Mode
with Networking. Sure enough, I could then ping the desktop both from the
router and the laptop.

I assume this means that, somehow, I am still being blocked by some process,
presumably a firewall?

As I said, Norton is uninstalled and the Windows firewall is disabled on the
desktop (Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Firewall -> Off (not recommended)
-> OK). I just used Task Manager to review running processes and did not see
any obvious references to Norton or Symantec products. Is there any way that
I can verify that my firewall is indeed down as I think it is? Could
something else be blocking me?

I really appreciate your insight.

Thanks Robert, but as I said, Norton has been uninstalled and the Windows
firewall has been disabled. Unfortunately, I had already reviewed the

that you referenced and had no luck.

I'm thinking it's a TCP/IP, registry, or router issue at this point but I
just don't know hardware/networking/security that well so I don't know
what
to check next.

I thought it was supposed to be easy to simply add a new computer to an
existing network.

My problem looks similar to many others here, but I’m stumped. Any
suggestions would be much appreciated.

My setup:

• Cable modem
• Motorola VT2542 router
• Desktop computer, Windows XP Pro, version 2002, sp2

• Workgroup Name: MSHOME on both machines


The Problem:
• The Desktop is a new machine that replaces an old Dell. I can’t get
it
to
network properly with the laptop.
• The new desktop can successfully ping itself, the router and the
laptop.
It can also view shared laptop files through Windows Explorer.
• The laptop can successfully ping itself and the router, but NOT the
desktop. I get the ‘Request timed out’ error.
• The laptop can ‘see’ the desktop in the MSHOME workgroup in Windows
Explorer, but when I try to access the desktop, I get the error:
‘’\\Readthegreen is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to
find
out
if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.
• While logged into the router, http://192.168.15.1, there is a ‘ping
test’
option under the Tools menu. Using that tool, I can ping the laptop
(192.168.15.3), but NOT the desktop (192.168.15.2).
• In summary, the desktop is not accessible by either the laptop or the
router

Attempted Solutions:
• Originally, both machines were running Norton Internet Security. I
added
the laptop’s IP address to the desktop’s list of trusted computers and
vice
versa using within Norton.
• When the above did not work, I disabled both the personal firewall
and
intrusion prevention features of Norton on both machines. At the same
time,
I verified that the Windows firewall was not enabled.
• I verified that the registry values of both
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Lsa\restrictanonymous
and
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Lsa\restrictanonymous
were
set to 0 (zero).
• I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP on both machines (Network
Connections
-> Local Area Connection -> Properties -> Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) ->
Properties -> Advanced -> WINS)
• I have now uninstalled Norton from the desktop and disabled the
windows
firewall. I also reset the router to the factory defaults.
