access problem--what happened?

I have a Dell dim 2400 desktop in the basement with a linksys router. I have
an Inspiron 2200 laptop. I have XP HOME on both computers.
I have had no problems except for earlier today. I have some shared folders
and the printer in the basement is shared. Today I tried to print something
and got an error. Then I tried to get a file from a desktop shared folder
and it couldn't find the path. Basically, it does this when the desktop is
turned off, but it wasn't. Incidentally, no problems in getting on the
internet.
Anyway, I rebooted both the desktop and the laptop and all is working
perfectly. I suspect this will be one of those unexplained glitches, but
does anyone have an idea of what might have occurred? The desktop had been
on for a few days. I had accessed the shared folders a few hours prior to
the problems and in fact had also used the printer.
