Re: Can XP HOME computer function as an IP ROUTER?

Thanks for your reply.
I don't want to use ICS, as that necessitates same ip network. I am trying
to connect two ip nets bilaterally, like it's done in a textbook on TCP/IP.
This is an experiment.

..
Thus I have my own reasons for wanting to employ a router here, and have
long thought past the idea of employing a stand-alone router

Thanks again.

Hi
To share an Internet connection through a computer you need to set ICS,
Win
XP Home should do ICS.
Here you can find easy elaborate instructions.
http://www.geekgirls.com/windowsxp_home_network.htm
That said, if you have an Internet connection with external Modem there is
No reason to use a whole computer as a Router.
Simple Stand alone Router can be found for less the $20. Using stand alone
Router provide faster and more stable connection, and there is No need to
keep a special computer always On for this purpose.

I have been instructed on how to implement an XP Pro computer as an IP
router.
The method is quite simple.
BEST ARTICLE --> http://www.home-network-help.com/ip-forwarding.html
The following corroborates the point, but it is incomplete in that it
does
not instruct on how to configure the NICs.

I don't have an XP Pro computer, so I tried it on an XP Home computer.
It
didn't work.

This site http://www.williamaford.com/XPHomevsXPPro.php mentions only
that
"simple TCP/IP services" are provided in 'Pro, but not in 'Home. I
didn't
see anything in Paul Thurrott's authoritative reference on the
differences
between these to operating systems, beyond this point. Maybe I missed
something, but I don't think so.

Can anyone verify that XP Home or Pro can function as a router?
