PC can't establish internet connection

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

To all the experts,
I have a HP Pavilion a255c PC with XP home edition SP1. The PC had problem
establishing internet connection recently probably due to some corrupted
system files. I ran anti-viruses software and cleaned up the affected files.
I deleted the ISP software and tried to re-install the software again. The PC
couldn't recognize the DSL modem and couldn't login the ISP web site. The
modem works fine with other PC.

I went on to open the 'Network Connections', then double clicked the
'WIreless Network Connection 2'. It opened the 'Status' window showing the
Activity The number of packets sent increased steadily, but the number of
packets received came in very slowly. I disabled and enabled the connection.
The same packet activity happened. I selected the ‘Support’ tab and try to do
‘Repair’. A window popped up saying that “The following steps of the repair
operation failed: Purging the DNS Resolver cache. Please contact your network
administrator or ISP.”

I contacted the ISP but the technician asked me to call HP support. I did
on-line chat with HP support for an hour and couldn’t find out the problem. I
tried: 'ipconfig/flushdns' ,'ipconfig/renew' and ‘services.msc’. None worked.
Finally, the HP support advised me to re-cover the PC to factory
installation.

Please let me know if there is anything I can try before doing the factory
recovery.

Thanks in advance.
