Thanks Barb,
You and Jack have both pointed me in the right direction, it was indeed the Socket fix that was needed. Thanks for taking the time out to help.

You can also try the winsock fix

Thanks for the suggestion Barb, I have tried one from the day before. Same--
thing. I'm going to try one from a week ago and see what happens. I also
took a restore point before I started screwing around with it so hopefully I
can still get back to my original 'flawed' system.
Thanks ,
Mark

Have you tried a restore point a day or so "before the crash"?
now that you have tried all these things, it is tough to say what
state the system is in.

Hi all,
I had a crash on my Acer laptop over the weekend. Don't know what happened
but I can no longer get any DNS resolution, I can't even ping localhost(
though 127.0.0.1 is fine) . I can still connect to networks and I can
reach
machines via IP address but I can't put their names in. I've tried
uninstalling/re-installing Network cards, TCP-IP etc and I've been over
all
the settings and the Hosts file etc; bit stumped now and would be grateful
for any ideas?
