Thanks Malke. I chased quite a few links in the google search, but it didn't
quite have what I'm looking for. Maybe I need to rephrase the question. I
want to go over the internet rather than a dedicated or dial up phone line.
For hardware, do I need a router or switch? Do I need a server? or...
Because we all have broadband internet, is there software built into Windows
XP Pro or a softswitch and a way to do file sharing without a dedicated
server?

I have an old desktop that I suppose I could recommission into a server.
Does it require Windows server software or is there something built into XP
Pro.

In lieu of a server, then I suppose we're going peer-to-peer. What kind of
set up would that take. Can anyone point me to a step-by-step guide?

Thanks,
Paul

Yes, it is completely possible although realistically it will be
necessary for all locations to have broadband. Lots of information here:

Been setting up these "WAN" (Wide Area Networks) for some time. With
these steps, your network should be 'secure.'
