Re: Sharing access denied -Too confused or stupid to figure out sharin

Hi
This does not relate directly to the share problem.
But you would have a better chance for a good connection, and sharing if you would switch to External Ethernet and uniform Network rather than using USB Modem and thus probably employing double NAT.

Help please!

I had to reinstall Windows XP Pro & SP2 (with Microsoft tech help) on PC1.
Since then, although I have the wireless network running & the internet
shared with laptop (running Media Edition 2005 - all updates current) and
another PC, I can no longer run a program installed on the PC1 as shared from
laptop. PC1 has wireless broadband USB modem attached that others share, and
connects to the router with a cable.

Prior to the above Windows debacle, I could.

PC1 has Program X installed that I want to run/access from laptop (rather
than using laptop hard drive space to install). In fact, since the above, I
can't access any program folders I've set to share on PC1 from laptop. I get
the message:

"\\computername\program(folder name) is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions."

Access Denied

All above without quotes.

I've read through lots of posts here & tried Help & Support on PC1 & laptop,
& I thought I had my settings & permission correct, but obviously, I don't.

I ran Network Setup Wizard on both PC1 & laptop. The problem I encountered
is that as I ran this on PC1, it disabled (sometimes) ICS & laptop had no
internet access (wireless adapter showed connected to network with good
signal strength, but "limited or no connectivity" - for internet). I've been
through this so……….. many times, I don't remember if it disabled all the
time. I thought it was because the wireless broadband modem is attached to
PC1 rather than router. Once I re-enabled ICS, laptop had access to internet
(but don't know if it will "force" USB modem to dial if PC1 not already
signed on).

On PC 1 with Program X, I disabled SFS, and then shared the program folder
on PC1 that I am trying to access from laptop, (along with 2 others I tried
to access in case the problem is specific to the individual program).

On laptop, under My Network Places the folder I'm trying to "run" from
laptop appears with the above-cited access denied message. Somewhere I
thought I read something about User accounts & passwords on the 2 computers,
so right now, both Users have same name - my 1st name), & no password. The
Widows firewalls on both PC1 & laptop have the program's .exe file as an
exception (but not other files I shared for test).

Sorry if this is too long, but I tried to cover things I think I've seen
asked by "helper," including MVPs when trying to help others.

Is there an easy to understand tutorial for those of us who don't know
anything about file sharing, permissions, etc.?

I've read some of PChuck's Network sites (below are 2), however, I may be
too tired or frustrated for them to make any sense (my problem of course)
