if you are plugged directly into the modem (PLEASE protect yourself
and buy a router) and rebooting the modem works, every time - then
it could be anything, possibly a problem with the autosensing of the
connection speed in the modem. You might try setting the speed of
the NIC to 10mbps half duplex. Then, when everything is working,
disable and re -enable. Same problem or not?

Hi Barb you seem to know what you're talking about, so can I restate the--

for me, NOTHING will cure the "unplugged" message except rebooting the
modem--disabling and re-enabling definitely doesn't work. In fact, for what
it's worth, if I disable it in the Network CP when it's working properly,
and then try re-enabling, it also does not work, and the modem has to be
rebooted (maybe this indicates something!!!).
As for the other suggestions--bad cable, modem, etc--remember my internet
connection works just wonderfully..sometimes for weeks and weeks... until I
reboot the computer. And when I reboot the modem, it ALWAYS works just fine
again right away. Could there be one little hardware/firmware problem with
the modem that it fails to, say, respond to some command the OS gives after
reboot? Or vice versa--the same thing failing in the network adapter?

I've seen posts on the nvidia forums regarding jumbo frame settings
and the unplugged message. It may be worth your while to post this
issue there.

There is nothing in the event log indicating a problem. I tried the--
newest NForce drivers, the Nforce drivers from the motherboard
manufacturers website. Nothing worked.
As I indicated earlier, if I reboot the computer, the network always
comes back as netwrok cable is unplugged. All I need to do is disable
the connection and re-enable it and the network connection start
working correctly. I even tried a different cable but no luck.
