I have broken something! I was uninstalling a couple of unwanted apps
including an older version of Firefox. Now Firefox wont run at all, and IE
reports "cannot display web page" even for good old www.bbc.co.uk. Local HTML
pages on the C: drive load OK

I have run the Network Diagnostics For Windows option. The diagnostic log
reports some winsock errors, below.

"All basic service providers entries are present in the winsock catalog"
"The winsock service provider chanins are valid"

...But then...

"Provider entry MSAFD TCPIP could not perform simple loopback communication
error 10061"

There are several more of these, and then some HTTP error messages, which i
guess are caused by the first errors.

I can ping my router, and other PCs on the router hub. I can still receive
and send Outlook emails. Other computers on the router work fine.

I have run a system restore from a few days back (when IE/FF were working
fine), but no luck. I cant see any "interesting" file in the delete cache
that look lik ethey might be any use.

Helppppp.

Laurence.

Laurence,

Microsoft supplied LSP / Winsock diagnostics are useful, but there are other
tools too. Not one tool is more useful than the others, because there are many
possible corruptions in LSP / Winsock. Be persistent here.

Chuck, thanks for your response, I shall investigate those other tools
anyway. But meanwhile, i stumbled about long enough in the Microsoft forums
to find someone else who had had the same problem. THE FINGER was pointed at
my Norton AV package, which is installed but currently inactive, as it has
such a MASSIVE impact on performance. I de-installed it, reinstalled a fresh
copy of Firefox, and lo, I am back on line! I am using both Windows Firewall
and am behind a NAT Router, so we'll see if that's enough to defeat the bad
guys out ther.

Laurence

Laurence,

Many people here point the finger at Norton AV, and not always the index finger
either. On the other hand, it's possible that un installing it forced a cleanup
of the problem LSP / Winsock entry. Thanks for letting us know.
