NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled on both PCs (I had enabled it on both)

The Windows firewall is off on boths PCs (using router firewall)

I only have an anti-virus program now

TCP/UDP port 445 open on router (had to open for incoming traffic). One of
your links stated both TCP & UDP. The other said just TCP. Which is correct
please?

Both PCs can now view the workgroup without the error I had before, but
neither computer can see itself or the other PC

OK, now that you know, Enable NetBT. For a small LAN, it's essential.

What router (make and model please) do you have? If it's a NAT router, there is
no firewall. And NAT only protects the computers on the LAN from what's on the
Internet, NOT from each other.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/what-is-nat-router.html

What AntiVirus program is it? Look for a bundled protection that acts like a
firewall!

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html

What traffic do you have, that you had to open the router for? Remember again,
that's only for traffic from the Internet to your LAN. There are no ports to
open, on a typical NAT router, that affect Windows Networking.

I cannot access the shared resources. The file and printer shares I guess are
setup from the wizard I had tried to use. I do not know how to modify things.
I'm used to the old tab where you can assign users and rights. How do I get
back to this please?

First, please resolve the NetBT issue. Are you logged in as an admin (hopefully
not), or as a full user which has the right to optionally run as admin. You
must run the Network Wizard as an administrator. UAC should prevent you from
getting the old tab etc without running as admin. If you were able to disable
Windows Firewall, you can Enable NetBT. Unless you Enable NetBT, you should
expect this problem.

Yes, I am logged in as the Administrator (to be able to assign user rights)
and NetBIOS over TCP/IP is still enabled.

Can I not assign rights the old way (with the tab)? I do not want to use the
wizard. Is that my only option? If so, it keeps turning on the Windows
firewall which I do not want to use. If I try to turn it off... some issue
with sharing comes up in a warning like message box.

What does UAC stand for please?

UAC = User Access Control. UAC prevents you from running processes as an
administrator, unless intentionally. But that's in Vista. Your complaining
about missing "the old tab where you can assign users and rights" made me think
Vista, where people are constantly complaining.

So now, I'm confused. We have one post
"I can see both PCs on one PC. On the other PC... YES!! both are visible on both
PCs."
then a second post
"I cannot access the shared resources. The file and printer shares I guess are
setup from the wizard I had tried to use."

Is NetBT enabled now, and is everything working, or is there still a problem?

I still have the most recent problems. The PCs can see each other, but I
cannot access shared resources. Yes, both PCs have NetBIOS enabled.

I think the confusion is because I have made changes and the problem has
changed, and I have posted what I have done and how the network was affected
as a result.

OK, if the computers can see each other, that's an improvement. Now we have
another problem to fix. You just have to go one at a time.

We need updated diagnostics. Logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net
config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer, are a good
place to start. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

I have fixed the security tab missing problem. Simple filing sharing was
turned on in error.

Ouch. Such a simple detail, yet so easily overlooked. Thanks for the update.

Is everything working now, or is there yet a detail to diagnose?
