It isn't particularly safe to plug directly into a broadband modem.
You should consider a router that you would leave running 24/7.
Check for messages in the EventViewers
See if there is a newer driver for the Nic.

onboard Intel(R) PRO/1000 PL network adapter
ISP: Shaw Cable (Canada)
Terayon Terapro TCM200 cable modem: coaxial cable going in; ethernet cable
going out to computer network port; no switches on it, just the standard 4
indicator lights. I have no idea if there are any config options on it or
how I can access them.
