I found this to be helpful, but it didn't fix my problem. I am running a
two-PC network with Linksys. Suddenly, after McAfee detencted an infested
e-mail and quarantinned/removed it, I could no longer access the Internet. I
am running XP Home on an HP Pavillion. The error is "Network Cable
Unplugged." I have:
- Installed a new network card - same error as with the PCI 10/100
- Run both downloaded utilities (Winsock Fix and WinsockXPFix)
I have swapped cables around - end-to-end and cable swap - all work just
fine for client computer.
- I have reset the winsock catalog
- I have tried using both static and dynamic IP addresses.
I believe that there may be a problem with Windows Firewall. I cannot
access Windows Firewall because the ICS is not running and apparently can't
be found.
- I cannot run repair on this connection.
- ipconfig returns an internal error
- netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt is not found
Apparently McAfee (or the virus it trapped) wiped out something in the stack
that has really shut this down and invalidated most tools & utilities.
I'd appreciate any clues to help repair this situation.

If XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the
command window.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.
