I’ve a home LAN with two Dell desktop computers and a Linksys BEFSR41 router.
Both computers have Windows XP, and everything is wired. About a month ago
the computers stopped seeing each other for no apparent reason, though the
DSL connection has never failed. After a lot of fiddling around, I still
haven’t been able to solve the problem and get back to the file/printer
sharing of before.

The latest reinstallation of the network, though, may provide some
information to the guru’s who hopefully can solve my problem. A couple of
days ago I reinstalled the LAN and sharing, using the Linksys “Configuring
File and Printer Sharing” instructions, which ends up using the Wizard.
After rebooting I went to Explorer and then Microsoft Windows Network (on
computer #1), and (gasp) saw the drives on computer #2. I was able to open
folders.

I then went to computer #2 to check if it could see my computer, #1. An
error had popped up, “Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a
problem and needed to close”, apparently at the end of the boot. I then
clicked on the link “To see what data this error report contains, click
here.” The “Error Signature” said:

szAppName: svchost.exe szAppVer: 5.1.2600.2180 szModName: advpack.dll
szModVer: 7.0.6000.16414 offset: 00007bd8

I tried but couldn’t access computer #1 and got the error, “Unable to browse
the network. The network is not present or not started.”

I then went back to computer #1 and tried to access computer #2 and got the
error, “Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission, etc.”

From this point on both computers can’t see each other. Can anyone help me
with this problem?

Both pings were successful. I'll go through the list from the link this
afternoon.

I've gone through the chicagotech link, and the error messages I've
gotten are different from those in "accesserrors". In the error messages I
show in my original post, showing "Generic Host Process for Win32...close"
and the dll "advpack", can there be a problem with the dll that shuts down
the service/connection or whatever?
