Ah, that makes sense, however it doesn't explain why my Xbox 360 is unable to connect, but it would seem that that is a topic for another newsgroup.
I'm not concerned about opening the group policy editor, I don't use it, it's just that one of the websites I was looking at said that I should check some settings there.

appreciate any help or advice.
The Internet Gateway that appears in the Network Connections folder is
your router. Your computer is not configured as an Internet Gateway.
Clicking the Internet Gateway icon lets you monitor and control the
router's operation. When you disable the Internet Gateway, you're
telling the router to disconnect itself from the Internet. That cuts
off Internet access for all of the computers.
To configure the computer manually, open the network connection's
TCP/IP properties and configure them to obtain an IP address and DNS
server address automatically.
Have you disabled any system services? Are there any error messages
from networking services in Event Viewer?
What exactly happens when you try to access the Group Policy editor?
Does the computer have Windows XP Home Edition or Professional?
