Hi,

I have two desktop computers sharing my cable connection via a
D-Link DI-704 Router. Internet, file and print sharing are
working just fine on both PC's.
Both PC's are running Win XP Pro SP2 and the necessary critical
updates,
patches and hotfixes. Since a few months though I'm having
problems and I'm not sure if they are internet, network or browser
related. Ok I upraded MSIE from version 6.x to 7. I also
upgraded WMP from version 10 to 11. Also in this case the
necessary updates were installed. I also installed Symantec
Norton Internet Security 2007 and Backup and Restore again with
the necessary updates. Since then there are a lot of websites
acting weird. If I click certain links of the main or any page of
some sites I notice in the lower left corner of the browser that
the DNS is changed to an IP address beginning with 65.xxx.xxx.xxx
and finally I end up on either a Google search page or other
annoying pages. Trying to click the link more then once doesn't
help at all. First I thought that the error was produced because
of the installation of MSIE 7. As complimentary test I also
installed Firefox Mozilla and the Netscape browser. Unfortunately
both browsers act the same when tested. I uninstalled both
Symantec applications but still I'm experiencing the same problem.
Although I uninstalled both applications correctly I also
downloaded and ran the clean tool from Symantec just to make sure
both applications were completely uninstalled without leaving any
traces. At this point I was thinking rather that my PC was maybe
hit by a virus, a hack, a browser Hijack, ad- spy or malware. So
I ran some applications like AdAware SE personal editon and
Microsoft Defender. Not one of them could actually solve anything
nor could they give me any further information. I also checked my
network configuration but can't find anything wrong. My last hope
is to complety reinstall my PC although this is really the last
action I want to preform. I really hope that there is still a
solution so that I don't have to reinstall my PC from scratch. It
will take me days maybe a week before my PC will be completely
reinstalled.

Get "HijackThis" from:

Run it, then take your report and submit it to:
<http://www.hijackthis.de>
.... and it should give you a clue as to what's happening.

Be careful, HijackThis reports the good as well as the bad so be
careful about what you delete...
