Lem, is a PCICIA card a NIC or should it be integral to my Motherboard - Syntax SV266A? Installed drivers are VIA 4 in 1 443v and VIA Hyperionpro v511a both recommended me by driveragent.com.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled all drivers - no ghosts!
Thanks so far btw.

Do you mean a "PCMCIA" card rather than "PCICIA"? A PCMCIA card, sometimes called a PC Card or Cardbus Card, is almost always used on laptops, not desktops. The corresponding Netgear product is the WG511: http://tinyurl.com/yvvc2b

Your WG311 is usually called a "PCI card" (without the CIA after it), and can only be installed in desktop/towers.

One certainly can buy an Ethernet NIC PCI card. Staying with Netgear (for illustration only), the FA311 is a PCI card Ethernet NIC: http://tinyurl.com/s65nt

As far as I can tell, your motherboard does have a built-in Ethernet NIC. As described here http://tinyurl.com/2gdddv it's supposed to have a "LAN: 10/100 Mbps Faster Ethernet" but this might be optional. Do you have an RJ-45 jack on the back of your computer? If not, you didn't get this option.

If you do have the LAN option, and if you don't have a CD that came with the motherboard to get the network drivers, you could look at Driverguide.com (http://tinyurl.com/ytdnac) shows a number of network adapter drivers for Syntax SV266M and SV266MA, but I don't know if they are correct for your SV266A.

If you have an available PCI slot, it might be simpler just to buy a network adapter and forget about the built in network adapter (if you in fact have one). They are pretty inexpensive (can be < $10 US).
